Topic Habitat: Embeddedness at Pool Tails Wheatfield Tribs 2001

Caption:  The chart above shows the degree to which potential salmonid spawning substrate at pool tails is buried or embedded according to 2001 California Department of Fish and Game habitat typing surveys in the Gualala basin. Less than 25% embedded (blue) is optimal salmonid spawning habitat, 25-50% (light green) moderately impaired and 50-75% and 75-100% are highly to severely impaired. This chart shows a fifth category used to describe pool tails otherwise unsuitable for spawning (log, plank, rock, concrete sill, bedrock sheet, etc.). The best values for salmonid spawning appear in House Creek with Pepperwood Creek. The mainstem Wheatfield Fork also has some optimal spawning conditions, however, Tombs Creek and Danfield Creek show impaired conditions for salmonid spawning. Embeddedness estimates are visual and involve some subjectivity and are, therefore, not as rigorous in describing spawning and incubation habitat conditions, as are bulk gravel samples.
