Fish: Estuary Juvenile Steelhead Length Comparisons Gualala vs. Garcia |
|
Caption: This chart shows the length of the juvenile steelhead in seining samples collected by Brown (1986) in the Gualala River estuary and those caught by Higgins (1995) in the Garcia River estuary. Fish size was generally much smaller in the Gualala sample versus those captured in the Garcia estuary. Yearling steelhead are those between 100 mm-150 mm (4-6 inches) and fish over 150 mm are two years old or older. Gualala fish were generally sub-yearlings with no two year old fish present, while Garcia steelhead juveniles were predominantly yearlings with a substantial number of two year old fish present. Data are derived from a California Department of Fish and Game memo (Brown, 1986) and Higgins (1996). See InfoLinks for further information and discussion.
