| Caption: This chart shows the results of pesticide monitoring in surface water samples taken in seven of Maine's salmon-bearing rivers and several tributaries in late September 1997 by the Maine Board of Pesticides Control. Samples were analyzed for 33 pesticide chemicals and degradation (metabolic breakdown) products. Hexazinone, the only chemical detected, was present in 19 (29.4%) of the 64 samples collected. No pesticides were detected in the Sheepscot samples, although Dill et al. (2002) noted that herbicides are applied to several hundred acres of forage corn and approximately 100 acres of Christmas trees in the Sheepscot watershed. Data are from Chizmas (1999), who speculated that the Hexazinone was entering surface waters from groundwater contaminated by agriculture.
