Caption:  California Department of Fish and Game surveys of the Wheatfield Fork tributaries in 2001 measured maximum depth for every pool surveyed and results are shown above. Pool depth is extremely restricted even in the Fifth Order Wheatfield Fork where many pools are less than three feet deep. House has the best pool development of tributaries measured while Tombs Creek shows the greatest problem with aggradation. Smaller streams show few pools deeper than three feet. Brown et al. (1994) suggested that coho juveniles need pools greater than three feet deep for successful rearing. Streams are sorted by stream order with larger streams near the top because they naturally provide deeper pools than small streams. See Info Links for more information.
