This picture was taken looking up the Little North Fork Gualala River during summer 2001. The stream appears aggraded with the narrow stream channel bounded by active gravel terraces. The stream habitat is a riffle and both riffles and runs and glides (flatwater) increase as a stream becomes aggraded. Photo provided by Dave Hope, North Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board.

PHI inspection tour on the lower North Fork Gualala in summer 2001. Wide gravel bar and narrow stream suggest aggradation. small particle size distribution of stream gravels would also lead to high bedload mobility (and poor spawning success) at this location. Photo provided by Dave Hope, North Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board.

The North Fork Gualala gravel bar depicted here has mostly small diameter gravel, which would lead to high bedload mobility (and poor spawning success) at this location. Photo provided by Dave Hope, North Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board.

The North Fork Gualala gravel bar depicted here has mostly small diameter gravel. The fact that this sediment remains in the system desoite its mobility suggests recent high sediment supply. Photo provided by Dave Hope, North Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board.

The North Fork Gualala riparian zone has been inundated with sediment at this location in recent years with the redwood at center buried by approximately four feet of sediment. Photo provided by Dave Hope, North Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board.
