The stakes at left are likely willow sprigs. The purpose of planting these may have been to try and get some root growth started to try and bind soils along the upper edge of the slide scarp, as the road is slumping in the area just beyond the willow stakes. The mulch covered embankment at right is adjacent the stream. Photos provided by the E-Center in Ukiah.
This photo shows the same location as Picture #1, but looking in the opposite direction. The cut-bank upslope of the road at right has been mulched and branches used to reduce surface erosion and to retard further slumping. Photo courtesy of the E-Center in Ukiah.

This picture shows a segment of the road leading down to the stream that has been decommissioned. Not only has mulch been spread, but numerous logs have been laid perpendicular to sheet flow to dissipate energy of storm water and prevent gully erosion and sediment delivery. Photos provided by the E-Center in Ukiah.
This photo shows the riparian zone just downstream of the road decommissioning project. Note the large, fire-scarred conifers at right. Photo provided by the E-Center in Ukiah.
