The river loses surface flow from here to the mouth in summer, approximately 1/4 mile above the mouth. The Garcia River Watershed enhancement Plan (MCRCD, 1992) advanced the hypothesis that the grade of the stream here was locked by the large substrate and embeddedness, which might be a factor in loss of surface flow. Close up of highly embedded gravel bar on the margin of the North Fork Garcia River. Note fine sediment in the interstitial areas between cobble and gravel. Photo by Pat Higgins. 2/10/2003.
This photo was taken just up from the convergence with the mainstem and shows the North Fork in the foreground and a large terrace of stored material with a high amount of fines. While the North Fork has not experienced recent catastrophic sediment evulsions, there does seem to be a significant source of fine material. Photo by Pat Higgins. 2/10/2003.
