A closer look on the bank just upstream reveals a dead steelhead. See Picture #2 for a zoom of the carcass. Photos by Pat Higgins. February 2000.
Although steelhead have the ability to survive spawning, unlike many other Pacific salmon species, they do sometimes die when on their spawning journey. This highly colored fish is a male and males survive spawning less often than female steelhead. Photos by Pat Higgins. February 2000.
The mainstem Garcia River below Eureka Hill Bridge has a mild gradient and a riparian canopy of willow, alder, conifer and California Bay laurel. Photo by Pat Higgins. February 2002.
This photo was taken while fishing for steelhead, which is why the fishing rod is in the picture. This is a pool with deep scour on the right here looking downstream. The Garcia develops enough depth in this reach to hold adult winter steelhead and to provide deep pools for rearing of their juveniles in summer. Photo by Pat Higgins. February 2002.
Hutton Gulch joins the middle mainstem Garcia River. The small delta suggests a modest sediment supply from this tributary. Photo by Pat Higgins. February 2002.
