This raw bank is on the south side of the Garcia River at the top of the Henry Stornetta Ranch just below Windy Hollow Road. Note the invasive, non-native ivy growing near the top of the bank. The following pictures show armoring of this bank with whole trees, willow sprigs and alder planting and another successful example of "bio-engineering". Photo provided courtesy of Craig Bell.
This large alder was felled on site to provide bank armoring after willow sprigs and alder starts had been planted. The large wood was partially buried or keyed into the bank. Note the ivy in the mature riparian tree. This species continues to the threaten riparian restoration success at this site. Photo provided courtesy of Craig Bell.
This photo was taken looking south at restored bank shown in Picture #2 on the upper Henry Stornetta Ranch in February 2002. Willows are well established in and around the large wood. Photo by Pat Higgins.
This photo was taken looking upstream on the mainstem Garcia River just below Windy Hollow. The bank on the right in the photo is another view of the same location as Pictures #2-3. Photo by Pat Higgins. February 2002.
This photo shows the south bank of the Garcia River above Highway 1 on the Henry Stornetta Ranch eroding under a fence. This bank failure occurred in January and March 1995. See Picture #6 for the same location but a slightly different view. Photo provided courtesy of Craig Bell.
This summer 2000 photo shows alders well established in the riparian buffer and a stable fence line as a result of bio-engineering project at this site. Photo provided courtesy of Craig Bell.
