California Department of Fish and Game Warden Ed Ramos joins Craig Bell in a pre-project site inspection at the Henry Stornetta Ranch. This area was being used for a cattle watering access and crossing. Note the power pole, which can be used as a reference for "after" restoration photos (Picture #3). October 10, 1995. Photo provided by Craig Bell.
Volunteers from the local community and from other areas convene to plant trees and do willow "sprigging" along the south bank of the Henry Stornetta Ranch just above Highway 1. This project was sponsored by Trout Unlimited. The location is the same as in Picture #1 but looking in the opposite direction. The Highway 1 Bridge support pillars are barely visible at the top of the photo. Pictures #3-#6 show the success of this effort. Photo by Craig Bell. January 1996.
This photo shows the same location as Picture #1, but slightly zoomed in. Compare the trees here next to the pole in 2001 with the same view in 1995 in Picture #1. Willow and alder trees grow vigorously in the marine climate near Pt Arena, which includes plenty of summer fog. Photo provided by Craig Bell.
This 1994 photo shows the area of the south bank of the Henry Stornetta Ranch looking downstream, with the Highway 1 Bridge just out of view to the right. See Picture #5 to see this area in 1997 after it was planted and Picture #6 for the same location in 2002. Photo by Craig Bell.
This October 1996 photo shows remarkable growth of willows in the area of the south bank of the Henry Stornetta Ranch where the volunteers in Picture #2 planted in January of the same year. Picture #6 for the same location in 2002. Photo by Craig Bell.
This August 2002 photo shows the south bank of the Henry Stornetta Ranch above Highway 1, with the cattle crossing completely re-vegetated. Photo by Pat Higgins.
