This photo shows an eroding bank on the lower Garcia River just upstream of Highway 1 on the Henry Stornetta Ranch taken in August 1994. The erosion is not just a problem for water quality but also a major risk for loss of valuable agricultural land. The next sequence of photos shows restoration progress since then. Photos provided courtesy of Craig Bell.
This photo shows the same location as Picture #1 and was also taken in 1994, but is looking downstream towards Highway 1. Note that there are very few trees established to hold the soil of the stream bank. Photos provided courtesy of Craig Bell.
Alder growth began to be established by 1997 as a result of restoration efforts. Note the dense patches just upstream where intensive planting has taken place that almost completely armors the bank. Alders are also poking up through the downed wood that is part of the project further upstream. The nearest bank has trees established along the toe of the bank near the water. See the Picture #4 to see the same location in August 2002 and the next Topic to see how this project was implemented. Photo courtesy of Craig Bell.

Henry Stornetta receives an award from Trout Unlimited and Craig Bell (at right) of a Calcutta "Stogie" model bait casting reel for steelhead fishing. Jennifer Presnell (left of Craig) and Libby Earthman of the Americorp Watershed Stewards program are also pictured. Photo by Pat Higgins.
Looking upstream along replanted and restored banks on the lower Garcia River. Note the dimples on the water which signify steelhead juveniles rising to the surface for insects. See the Topic Fish: 2002 Dive Salmonid Count Garcia (GAR_1) Above Highway 1 to see how many fish were in this reach. See the next Topic to see how the project was implemented. Photo by Pat Higgins.
This photo was taken looking downstream from the top of the project on the Henry Stornetta ranch in February 2002. Note that large wood on the banks is now almost totally obscured by alder growth. Photo by Pat Higgins.
Looking downstream towards Highway 1 at the entire length of the riparian restoration project. The overhanging vegetation and large wood provide good cover for adult winter steelhead, which the anglers at left are fishing for. February 2002. Photo by Pat Higgins.
