The fence extending into the river was likely to intercept logs escaped from log drives to the mill upstream. Note the lack of vegetation on the stream banks adjacent to the bridge. This photo shows a reinforced Garcia River Bridge after the 1906 earthquake. Note photographer W. W. Fairbanks horse and runabout in river bed. The willows lining the banks of the river look, from this angle, to be very similar to riparian vegetation today.
