Click on image to enlarge (109K).This is yet another shot of the old Garcia Mill built in 1869 - 1870 and burned in 1894. The old mill had an output of 8 Million feet of lumber per year, which was all flumed to Rollerville, about 7 miles down the Garcia River and to the west. The river was dammed here to intercept logs floated downstream to the mill. Photo taken in 1891. Note the flume on the extreme right. The ties were attached three together and floated in the flume to Rollerville. Note that trees on the hillslope above the mill pond are early seral stage. The planks (or ties) were bundled together and shunted down the flume below the dam on the far side. Early in 1893 over 5,000 ties were sent down the 6 to 7 mile flume in one day. Logs were likely dragged to the river from upslope areas with oxen then rolled into the river for the float downstream to the mill.
